Event Details

We are pleased to invite you to the next event of our European Café series.

The Centre for Euro-Atlantic Integration and Democracy (CEID) has launched a series of discussions on current European issues, supported by Erste Stiftung and the National Cooperation Fund (NEA).

This time we invite you to join the discussion on “EU and Russia: Beyond the Point of no Return?”.

The past two and a half decades had its ups and downs: while Boris Yeltsin’s Russia still saw itself as part of Europe but benefitted little from closer integration, Vladimir Putin increasingly views the on-going EU and NATO enlargements as threats to Russia’s spheres of influence. The European Union has gone through different stances, too: from grand visions of Russia as a strategic political and trading partner, the EU has gradually become disillusioned and lost trust in its Eastern neighbor. The annexation of Crimea and the on-going war in Eastern Ukraine marked a milestone of this relationship, further aggravated by the hybrid warfare and propaganda war launched by Moscow. Russian political relations to the EU have reached the freezing point. But have we achieved the point of no return or is reconciliation still possible?

Our guests are:

Mr. Esko AhoFormer Prime Minister of Finland

Prof. Péter BalázsProfessor for International Relations at CEU, former member of the European Commission, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary

The discussion is moderated by Ms. Edit Inotai, Senior Fellow of CEID.
