Event Details
Dear Sir or Madam,
We are pleased to invite you to the next event of our European Café series, focusing on the Germany’s position in the EU.
December 7th will be a historical date is Germany. After Chancellor Merkel announced she is no longer running for the CDU’s Presidency, the German Christian Democratic Union will elected a new president – and a potential candidate for the Chancellor. A new political leadership may emerge, changing the political landscape in Germany but also beyond its borders.
What could be the political consequences in Germany, how long could Angela Merkel still remain in office? How will the changes in Berlin affect Germany’s EU politics, just a few month before the EP elections? Will there be a fundamental difference in EU-affairs if the CDU is led by Friedrich Merz, a more transatlantisist candidate and a political outsider of the last ten years, or Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, the preferred successor of Chancellor Merkel? Is there a risk of Germany becoming more absorbed in its domestic powerstruggle and losing sight of important European reforms? Is the window of opportunity opened by the election of Emmanuel Macron and his bold European reform plans slowly narrowing? And last but not least, is there a realistic chance to improve German-Hungarian bilateral political relations after a potential change of guards at the German Chancellery?
Our guests are:
Dr. Josef Janning, Head of the Berlin Office of the European Council on Foreign Relations ( ECFR)
Dr. Gergely Prőhle, former Ambassador to Germany and State Sectetary of the Ministry of Human Resources and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
The event will be moderated by: Ms. Edit Inotai, Senior Fellow, CEID
